The University is the brain child of Padmashree Dr. Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao a legendary figure and Former Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh. It was inaugurated in 1986. The first chancellor of the university was none other than Late Dr. N.T.Ramarao Presently, the Hon’ble Governor of Andhra Pradesh is the Chancellor.

Dr. Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao, Former Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh had a great vision of improving quality of medical education and health care for the benefit of people of Andhra Pradesh. He had visualized the need for establishing a dedicated University exclusively taking care of Medical, Dentai, Nursing and Allied health educational institutions. In order to realize the objective, he was instrumental in establishing the University of Health Sciences through Act No. 6 of 1986. In addition, he has established the University with headquarters at Vijayawada which had played a key role in development of Medical Education in the present state of Andhra Pradesh.

This is the first Health University in the entire country dedicated towards medical education and health services
